Step-By-Step Guide for Adding GS1 Identifiers to Ensure Regulatory Compliance and Full Traceability in Your Supply Chain

GS1 is a global, not-for-profit standards organization that makes it possible for companies to identify products, logistics units, locations, and parties in a consistent, universally understood way. If you’ve ever scanned a retail barcode, you’ve used a GS1 standard. Beyond point-of-sale, GS1 underpins how products are listed, shipped, received, traced, and recalled across entire supply chains.

 

Add your Company Prefix

GS1 Company Prefix (GCP) is the numeric “root” assigned to your company. You use this prefix to create unique identifiers.

  1. Access the GS1 Settings by clicking on your profile picture in the top right and click on GS1 System







  2. Enter your Company Prefix and click Add Prefix



  3. Your company prefix has now been added and you are ready to create GTIN’s for articles including this company prefix

 

Add your Global Location Number (GLN)

The GLN (Global Location Number) is the globally unique ID for your physical location.

To add or edit your GLN, follow the steps below:

  1. Access the GS1 Settings by clicking on your profile picture in the top right and click on GS1 System




  2. Next to the GLN field click on the Edit button


  3. Enter your GLN and click Save



  4. Your company prefix has now been added and you are ready to create GTIN’s for articles including this company prefix

 

Add a GTIN to an Article

A Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the GS1 identifier used to uniquely and unambiguously identify any trade item, anything intended to be priced, ordered, or invoiced, at any point in the supply chain.

To add GTIN to your articles make sure your Company Prefix is added first, then follow the steps below.

  1. Edit an article where you want to add the GTIN,  click on Inventory > Articles

  2. Click on the Edit button, next to the article where you want to add a GTIN


  3. Open the GS1 Tab and enter the GTIN of the Article

    1. The system will check the integrity of the GTIN including checking that it is correctly connected to an added company prefix

  4. Click Save and your GTIN is now associated with the Article
