How do I work with label printers?

Through the Cannavigia Print Center, you are able to easily generate QR codes in various sizes to be attached to various components in your facility. Below are our recommendations on printers and labels:

Thermal Transfer Printers

The Cannavigia software generates a PDF/XLS/ZPL file that can be printed via your regular system dialog to your connected label printer.

*Note: some printer brands may require installation of a specific Driver in order to function.

Printers may need to be calibrated via the driver to specific label sizes, gaps, etc.. If printing from a PDF, make sure to adjust the label sizes before printing.

In general, most labels can be printed with any printer. If you want to label everything in your cultivation in a professional manner, we recommend printers that have the possibility to read ZPL-II language.

In the following you'll find the technical requirements your printer should fulfill in order to work optimally:

Thermo Transfer
203 dpi / 8 points/mm
104 mm wide
USB / Wi-Fi / Ethernet
Able to receive and print files in PDF (and/or XLS and ZPL-II) format

Brands & Types

We recommend to consult a printer specialist with these models to find what is the best solution for you in your region. The following printers have been successfully implemented with the Cannavigia software:

Zebra ZD-421t
Zebra ZT-231t
Epson TM-L90
Brother TD-420DN
CITIZEN CL-S621 TT

Ribbons

Thermal Transfer printers require Thermal Transfer ribbons.

Thermal transfer ribbon is a roll of clear plastic (PE) film coated on one side with ink. Depending on the printing requirements, the coating can be made from either wax, resin or a mixture of both.

Different quality of ribbons exist on the market, some are more resistant than others. Make sure the ribbon you purchase is scratch-proof. Ethanol-proof ribbon options are available as well, depending on your budget and printer model.

Labels

You have the choice to choose from a variety of materials of labels (aluminium, PPE, etc..).

When buying label rolls, make sure that they match the targeted printing technology (Thermal Transfer). Thermal Transfer labels only work with a color ribbon.

We recommend working with labels that are:

  • Fade-proof
  • Waterproof

Note: We do not recommend Thermal Direct labels as they tend to fade more easily (especially in humid or high-light environments). To read more about the difference between Thermal Direct and Thermal Transfer click here.
